What is a Porcelain Veneer?

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of porcelain that is placed over damaged, discolored, or misshapen teeth. Porcelain is an extremely durable material with a color, translucence and texture similar to tooth enamel. Porcelain is not susceptible to decay and resists staining while maintaining a natural appearance. Porcelain veneers, like porcelain crowns, can last for many years if they are properly applied and taken care of by the patient.

The Application Process

The application of porcelain veneers typically involves three visits to the office of Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Charles Janes in Hannibal, Missouri. During the initial consultation, Dr. Janes will explain the process and discuss which options are available and best for your desired goals. During the consultation, Dr. Janes will also explain the risks and costs involved with the procedure. At this time, we encourage to ask all the questions you may have about the procedure.

During the second visit, your teeth will be roughened and shaped, which involves the removal of part of the tooth structure. This is done in order to prepare a better surface for bonding and to make room for the placement of the veneers. After the shaping of the teeth, Dr. Janes will take impressions of your teeth and then send those impressions to the lab so the porcelain veneers can be custom made for you. Your new veneers are created in such a way that will fit your mouth perfectly. At this point, he may suggest that temporary veneers be applied to protect the prepared teeth until your veneers are completed.

During your third and final visit, Dr. Janes will test the veneers to make sure they fit properly and comfortably. He will also check to ensure they are the correct size and color. Clean teeth and healthy gums are necessary for the successful bonding of the veneers. Your teeth will be thoroughly cleaned before the veneers are permanently applied. You and he will work together at this time to assure your satisfaction with the result. Before the final fitting, further shaping or trimming of the veneers will be done.
