Questions about Inlays & Onlays

Hannibal, Missouri

What is the difference between inlays and onlays?

An inlay is contained within the cusps, or tips, of the teeth. An onlay, also called a partial crown, extends over the biting surface onto the side of the tooth.

When might I need a crown instead of an onlay?

Onlays give your tooth a new chewing surface, but do not protect the entire tooth like a crown does. You may need a dental crown if you have damage to the side of your tooth, have had a root canal, or have experienced a tooth fracture.

How long will the procedure take?

The traditional inlay/onlay process takes two visits to Dr. Janes' Hannibal office. During the first visit, the tooth will be prepared and a mold taken. The mold is then sent to a dental lab for fabrication and returned to Dr. Janes approximately two weeks later. During the second visit, Dr. Janes, fits and bonds the porcelain material to your tooth. In some case, Dr. Janes can use the CEREC system and create your inlay or onlay right in the office on the same day. Not every tooth is a candidate for CEREC, but when it is applicable, you can get your inlay or onlay in the same day without the inconvenience of a second visit or temporary restorations.

What are the advantages of porcelain inlays/onlays over metal fillings?

While there is still controversy in the medical community about the safety of mercury and mercury vapors, we believe that metal-free fillings are the best and healthiest way to restore your teeth. So the first advantage is that porcelain contains no metal and poses no risk in that way. Secondly, porcelain does not conduct heat so there's no hot/cold sensitivity when eating or drinking. Another advantage is that the porcelain bonds to the tooth and becomes part of the tooth, rather than being packed in like metal fillings. The result is a stronger, more durable tooth since the porcelain is bonded to the tooth.

I have metal fillings now - can they be replaced?

Yes, absolutely! You don't have to wait until a filling needs to be replaced to replace it. Schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Janes to see whether composite or porcelain fillings are the best solution for replacing your metal fillings.

What other options for fillings are there?

In addition to porcelain inlays and onlays, we also offer white composite fillings. While they do not have the translucence of porcelain (which makes them look more natural), they are less expensive and can be completed in one office visit.

If you have old metal fillings that need to be replaced or just a cavity that needs to be filled, a porcelain inlay or onlay may be the perfect solution for you. To find out more, please contact cosmetic dentist, Dr. Charles Janes in Hannibal, Missouri. We look forward to seeing you soon!
