There a number of options available for the restoration of missing teeth, but none have proven to be as functionally effective and durable as dental implants. Questions about Dental Implants

The Implant Dentistry Process

Jaw preparation – A typical dental implant is composed of a titanium screw and a dental crown. A small hole is drilled into the jaw where there is no tooth in order to guide the pilot screw that holds the dental implant in place.

Dental implant placement – To allow for the placement of the implant screw, the pilot hole is slowly widened, and then following the placement of the implant screw, a protective cover screw is placed on top to allow the implant site to heal and the implant to anchor to the jaw bone. This anchoring process is referred to as osseointegration.

Osseointegrated implants are the most commonly used and successful type of dental implant; it takes anywhere from three to six months for this type of implant to anchor and heal. Once this healing process is successful, Dr. Janes can complete the procedure with the placement of a crown. If osseointegration does not occur, the implant will not be successful.

Implant Retained Dentures – Implant restoring dentist, Dr. Charles Janes, has found implanted retained dentures are an effective tool in retaining an otherwise non-retentive denture. Dr. Janes will place a titanium screw into a hole drilled right in the tooth. Over a period of several months, the titanium will attach (integrate) into the bone. The implant is then uncovered and a post that pokes through the gums is attached to the implant. This post supports a porcelain tooth; it can also support a denture attachment. For patients who have no teeth whatsoever, a full mouth of implants may be necessary. For patients who cannot wear lower dentures, implanted retained dentures are especially effective.

Success rates

The placement of dental implants has become one of the most consistently successful procedures in cosmetic dentistry today. Research indicates a five-year success rate near 95% for lower jaw implants and approximately a 90% five-year success rate for upper jaw implants. The success rate for upper jaw implants is slightly lower because the upper jaw is less dense than the lower jaw, which makes successful implantation and osseointegration more difficult to achieve.

Dental implants may fail for a number of reasons. For instance, implants may break or become infected, and crowns may become loose. Also, smokers have a higher risk of implant failure. Throughout the process, Dr. Janes will discuss all the risk factors with you and answer any and all questions you may have.
