Dental Crowns

Serving Hannibal and St. Louis, Missouri and Quincy, Illinois areas

Like porcelain veneers, porcelain crowns have become one of the most popular options for improving the appearance of damaged teeth. You will hear dental crowns often referred to as “caps.” The purpose of a dental crown is to surround a damaged tooth with a custom-made material. Both the appearance of teeth and the function of teeth are significantly improved with the placement of porcelain crowns.

Dental crowns cover and protect the entire surface area of the tooth to virtually eliminate pain and restore strength. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, typically only address cosmetic concerns and are applied to teeth that are otherwise healthy.

Old technology required that dental crowns be made with a metal foundation. Most of the crowns that Cosmetic Dentist Dr. Charles Janes’ of Hannibal, Missouri places on our patients’ teeth are made out of pure porcelain, ceramic or reinforced resins, which produce  a much more aesthetically pleasing and durable result.

Why Dental Crowns?

Dr. Janes may recommend dental crowns for a number of cosmetic issues but usually patients require crowns for the following issues:

It is often advised that dental crowns not be placed solely for the purpose of improving the appearance of the tooth. They are best utilized to improve the look of your tooth when the crown serves other purposes as well such as restoring a tooth to its original shape or making a tooth stronger. Dr. Janes recommends that dental crowns not be used to improve the appearance of a tooth if other dental procedures could achieve the same cosmetic results. The reason for this is that he must grind away a significant portion of your tooth to place the crown. All of this will be explained thoroughly at the time of your consultation.

The Process

Two visits is usually all it takes for Dr. Janes to place a dental crown. During the first visit, Dr. Janes will remove portions of your natural tooth’s structure to accommodate the new crown. Surrounding teeth may also be prepared in this way. An impression is made and sent to a laboratory where the crown is manufactured; this typically takes about two weeks. Meanwhile, he will place a temporary crown. During the second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and the new custom dental crown is applied.

This procedure may vary somewhat depending on your specific goals. If crowns are being used to anchor a dental bridge or as a dental implant restoration, the procedure will be slightly different. Teeth with extensive damage may require that root canal work be performed prior to placing the crown.

Innovative technologies are allowing dental crown procedures to be done in just one visit to the office. A consultation with Dr. Janes will help you better understand the entire dental crown procedure. Porcelain crowns tend to cost more than other types of crowns because they are more time-consuming and require greater skill to be applied correctly. Our patients will tell you that they find the extra cost to be well worth it.
