Advantages of Porcelain Inlays

Porcelain inlays are fully customized fillings made of porcelain ceramic materials and just one of several metal-free filling options that cosmetic dentist Dr. Charles Janes offers his patients.

In the past metal amalgam fillings were the standard of care when it came to fillings cavities. Now we know that there are better and more comfortable ways to treat cavities. Better in the sense of being healthier for the body in general and better for the structure of the tooth.

Porcelain inlays do not contain mercury (or any type of metal) and do not contract and expand like metal fillings do. And because they do not conduct heat, patients are less likely to have hot and cold sensitivities when drinking their favorite beverages or eating their favorite foods.

Another advantage to inlays is that more of the tooth is preserved when preparing to address the cavity. Less of the tooth has to be drilled out to make room for the inlays than traditional metal fillings. The inlay is made exactly to the right size and shape and bonded directly to the tooth.

If you suspect you have a cavity or you have old metal fillings that need to be replaced, porcelain inlays may be the perfect solution.
